Grieving a Pet: Why Your Pain Is Real and How to Heal

Grieving a Pet

When I lost my first pet, I wasn’t prepared for the depth of grief I would feel. The world kept moving, but everything in me paused. If you’re grieving a pet right now, please know this: your pain is real, and you don’t have to go through it alone.

Why Pet Loss Hurts So Much

Our pets are more than animals — they’re companions, comforters, and part of the rhythm of our everyday lives. They greet us at the door, curl up next to us when we’re low, and love us without conditions. When that bond is broken, it leaves more than just an empty space on the couch — it leaves one in our hearts too.

I often hear people say, “It was just a dog” or “You can get another cat,” as if our grief should be short-lived or easily replaced. But grieving a pet can be just as profound as grieving any other loss, and it deserves to be acknowledged with care and compassion.

In fact, mental health professionals recognize this as disenfranchised grief — a type of grief that isn’t always validated by others. According to Psychology Today, pet loss often falls into this category, which can make the grieving process even more isolating.

How Grief Can Show Up

Grief is never one-size-fits-all. You might be feeling:

  • A deep ache in your chest when you walk past their favorite spot

  • Guilt over choices made near the end

  • Sleepless nights filled with memories

  • That sense of quiet in your home that feels anything but peaceful

These feelings are normal. They’re signs of love, not weakness.

Ways to Gently Support Your Healing

Here are a few things I often suggest to clients when they’re grieving a pet:

  • Allow yourself to feel it. There’s no timeline. Grief unfolds at its own pace.

  • Create a small memorial. Light a candle, write a letter, or frame a photo that brings you comfort.

  • Talk about your pet. Share their stories — their quirks, their habits, the joy they brought.

  • Try hypnotherapy. Sometimes grief gets stuck in the body or subconscious. Hypnotherapy can help soften the pain and guide you toward peace.
