Why Am I So Tense All the Time?

Understanding and Relieving Muscle Tension From Stress and Anxiety

You try to stretch it out. You take a few deep breaths. Maybe you book a massage or run a bath to help your body let go. For a moment, it helps. But then the tension creeps back in. Your shoulders rise. Your chest feels tight. Your jaw is sore again and you do not even remember clenching it.

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know this is not your fault. You are not doing anything wrong.

What you are feeling is a common and very real response to anxiety and chronic stress. You are not imagining it. You are just living in a body that has learned to stay on high alert, and that is EXHAUSTING! Tension in the body can build up for all kinds of reasons…anxiety, poor sleep, too much multitasking, overthinking, or even the strain of unresolved relationships.

What Your Body Is Actually Doing

When you are stressed out or anxious, even just a little, your body prepares to protect you. It is automatic. Your muscles tense and your breathing shifts. Your system becomes alert, ready for something to go wrong even if you cannot name what that something is.

This is a survival response. It is your body doing what it was designed to do.

The problem is, most of us are walking around with this response switched on all the time. And when that happens, your body never gets the message that it is okay to relax.

You might not even notice how much tension you carry until your neck seizes up or your sleep starts to suffer or you wake up with a clenched jaw and aching head. A big one for me is back tension!

Why the Tension Does Not Just Go Away

You may have tried everything to relax. Breathing exercises. Meditation. Long walks. All of it helps a little. But it never seems to stick.

This is because even when your thoughts feel calm, your body can still be stuck in an old loop. It actually remembers the stress and the pressure.

That tension gets stored deep in your nervous system and that becomes the new baseline. So even if you are not actively stressed in the moment, your body might still be responding as if it is.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help You Release It

This is where hypnotherapy becomes so powerful. Not because it forces your body to relax, but because it gently shows your system a different way to exist.

When we work together in a session, I help guide you into a state where your nervous system feels safe enough to let go.  In this space, we can begin to shift those old stress patterns that your body has been holding on to. We can retrain your system to recognize the difference between danger and safety. We can allow the body to experience what it feels like to soften without bracing for impact.

When your nervous system feels supported, your body responds and it releases the need to hold everything so tightly.

Two Simple Techniques You Can Try Today To Relieve Tension

You do not need to wait for a full session to start giving your body the message that it is safe to relax. Here are two techniques you can try right now. They may seem simple, but they work with how your body and nervous system are wired.

Tongue on the Roof of Your Mouth

Place your tongue gently on the roof of your mouth, just behind your front teeth and hold it there for 10 seconds.
As you do this, close your eyes if you like and take a slow breath in through your nose and exhale.
Then, let your tongue relax back to its normal position, where it would normally be, breath in and exhale through your mouth like a soft sigh.
Repeat a few times.

Why this works: That area on the roof of your mouth connects to the vagus nerve, which plays a huge role in regulating your nervous system. Gentle pressure there, combined with slow breathing, helps tell your brain and body that you are safe.

It also softens the jaw and the muscles in your neck and shoulders. These are often the places where stress hides. When they relax, the rest of your body often follows.

The Wall Press Reset

Stand facing a wall. Place your hands flat against it at shoulder height and shoulder width. Press into the wall firmly, like you are trying to push it away. Engage your muscles but stay grounded in your feet.

Hold the press for about ten seconds. Then slowly release and shake out your arms. Take a breath.

Why this works: Anxiety and stress often create a build-up of physical energy in the body. Your system is preparing to act, but most of the time, that energy has nowhere to go. It just gets stored.

Pressing into a wall gives your body a safe and controlled outlet for that energy. It helps complete the stress cycle. When you stop pressing, your body gets the message that the danger has passed. You might notice your breath softens, your mind quiets, or your muscles feel a little less tight.

It is a simple reset that your body understands on a deep level.

Final Thoughts

Muscle tension is not just about posture or stretching or remembering to relax your shoulders. It is about what your body believes it needs to do to keep you safe.

If you have been living in a tense body for a long time, I want you to know that there is another way.

Through hypnotherapy and nervous system work, we can help your body remember how to feel grounded again.

It is possible to feel calm in your body and present in your life. And if that is something you are ready for, I would love to support you.
